Job Position: Vegetable Production Officer

Job Summary

The Ecofarms seeks a diligent and passionate Vegetable Production Officer (VPO) to oversee and manage our horticulture sector. Responsibilities include but are not limited to, input selection, cultivation, pre- and post-harvest management, value chain management, and market linkage.

Eligibility and Competence:

  • Educational Background: Diploma or degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, Crop Science, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Proven Experience: Minimum of 3 years’ experience in vegetable production, with a documented history of managing high-yield vegetable crops (e.g., tomatoes, peppers, leafy greens).
  • Technical Knowledge: Expertise in vegetable cultivation techniques, including seed selection, planting, plant pathology, fertilization, irrigation, and integrated pest management (IPM); experience with greenhouse or hydroponic systems is a plus.
  • Data-Driven Approach: Experience in monitoring crop health, analysing soil and water data, and adjusting practices to optimize yield; familiarity with precision agriculture tools is an advantage.
  • Team Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to work with farm managers and labourers to coordinate planting and harvest schedules, with references confirming teamwork and communication skills.
  • Physical Stamina: Capability to perform fieldwork, including inspecting crops and assisting with manual tasks when needed, in various environmental conditions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, leadership, presentation, and reporting skills. 
  • Honest, with a teachable disposition and a passion for working with other farmers.
  • Familiarity with the local community and fluency in core local dialects. 

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee horticultural production. 
  • Develop and implement cropping plans and schedules for seasonal demands and climate variations. 
  • Conduct refresher training and capacity-building programs for staff and contract farmers. 
  • Carry out field trials for new inputs. 
  • Provide regular updates, reports, and recommendations to management.
